About the Institute

The Institute for Pastoral Excellence and Renewal is a ministry of First Baptist Church, Horizon City.  Our aim is to provide instruction, encouragement and refreshment to seasoned pastors as well as those who are just getting started.

  • Our presenters will be competent, caring, and experienced.
  • Our seminars will be academically sound and yet practical for real life.
  • Our subject material will be explained in simple, transferable concepts.
  • Our attendees will be involved, empowered, and honored.

This seminar will provide instruction and practice in developing the resources and skills to better interpret scripture.  Topics covered will include:

  • Understanding and determining context
  • Understanding background and the importance of ancient texts
  • How are the teachings of Christ in gospels applicable to the time of grace?
  • Examination of several "difficult" and "troublesome" passages
  • Resources to help with textual, historical and language difficulties

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. on Friday evening for on-site registration and light refreshments.  We will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.

bud goodwinThe presenter for this seminar is Bud Goodwin.  Bud has served over 40 years as an active pastor.  He holds a Doctor of MInistry degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.  He has served on the Southern Baptist Convention's Committee on Committees, a number of state convention committees, taught on an adjunct basis, and mentored many young ministers.  Having "retired" this past year from Rodeo Road Baptist Church in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he is now writing, teaching, and serving as interim and pulpit supply for area churches.  Bud lives with Judy, his wife of 50 years in Horizon City.
